Biggles Pioneer Air Fighter was first published in 1954 by Thames Publishing (Kingston Library). After a number of variant reprints, the books was also reissued in several variants by Dean and Son in the 1960s and again by Armada in the 1980s.
 
The book comprises short stories, mostly of them from The Camels are Coming are coming with some from Biggles and the Camel Squadron. Because the stories had all been published in book form elsewhere, purist collectors do not consider this title an distinct Biggles book. But The Camels are Coming had been long out of print from the 1950s until the 1980s. For many people, Pioneer Air Fighter was the only means to access pivotal stories where such as The Boob where Algy first appears, and Affaire de Coeur where Biggles meets Marie Janis.
