Prisoners Of Two Wars: An Australian Soldier's Story (2001) By Sherriff Probert & John Probert

Australians Sherriff and John Probert grew up knowing very little about their father, Jack Probert, other than that he had died a prisoner of war in the infamous Sandakan prison camp in northern Borneo near the end of World War II. After their mother died in 1973, the brothers stored her papers in a shed in John's backyard for almost a quarter of a century. When they finally got the opportunity to go through her papers, they uncovered in the letters and postcards the first tantalizing glimpses into their father's life. These discoveries would lead them on an odyssey across time and space to learn the story of their father's life, his imprisonment as a POW in both WWI and WWII, his parents' turbulent marriage, and his own inter-war life as a farmer. This moving account of their quest to discover the life and character of a man that they barely remembered, but who had such a heroic and tragic existence is sure to keep readers glued to the pages.
