The Modern Chinese Interpretation Sun Tzu's Art of War (2000) By Tao Hanzhang

A classic! Find inspiration in some of history’s great military victories as others have for over 2,400 years. Sun Tzu was the most famous military scientist, and one of the ablest commanders, in ancient China. Asian warlords, and modern leaders as dissimilar as Mao Tse-tung and General Eisenhower, have used his principles to change the shape of the world.

This modern interpretation is written by General Tao Hanzhang, who held the post of a senior officer in the Chinese People's Liberation Army. He offers a vivid, clear, and analytical explanation of Sun Tzu's thought on the art of war and provides penetrating comments on its values and shortcomings. General Tao provides a comprehensive framework for approaching modern as well as ancient Chinese military thought. The timelessness of Art of War is demonstrated here as General Tao has applied Sun Tzu's tenets to his own Communist principles. General Tao Hanzhang began his military career in 1933 when he joined the Red Army. During the Chinese Liberation War, he was chief of staff of the army. Later, he was provost in the North China Military and Political College. Since the founding of the People's Republic of China, he has held many important military posts. General Tao gives lectures and has held posts in Chinas highest military educational institution~the Chinese Military Academy. He retired at the age of 68 and became a senior adviser at the Beijing Institute for International Strategic Studies. He has visited the United States, Britain, France, and many other countries, lecturing on Chinese military thought and strategic problems.
