This manual is a guide for commanders and their subordinates in the conduct of visual aircraft recognition training programs in all components of the Army.

Scope

a. This manual provides information on current operational military aircraft of the United States and foreign countries that are reasonably expected to be observed during hostilities. Aircraft within this manual are grouped according to their classification (fighter, bomber, cargo, etc.).

b. A study of aircraft details is presented to provide familiarization with the distinguishing features of various types of aircraft configurations and their silhouettes when observed in flight.

c. Photographs and silhouettes of aircraft are presented by type with supplemental data on performance, dimensions, major distinguishing features useful in recognition, and user nations.

d. The material contained herein is applicable to both nuclear and nonnuclear warfare.

e. This manual does not attempt to contain all aircraft currently in use throughout the world, but concentrates instead on those aircraft of military significance which are now in use or can reasonably be expected to be observed during hostilities. Published changes to this manual will include additions and deletions as information becomes available on new developments in this field.
